What Does an AI Chatbot Actually Do?

When a customer types "Can I make a table reservation for tomorrow?" to a chatbot, a very rapid series of processes takes place in the background. You don't need a technical background to understand these processes — just grasping a few key concepts is enough.

What Is Natural Language Processing (NLP)?

When people talk, they express the same thing in different words. "I want to make a reservation," "I want to book a table," and "do you have availability tonight?" all describe the same request. Natural language processing (NLP) is the technology that allows AI to understand that these different expressions mean the same thing.

The system tries to understand the intent behind words, not just pattern-match them. This is why typos or different sentence structures usually don't cause problems.
